In History of Art Therapy: Founders and Foundations, we start each class with an art directive. This is a wonderful way to explore the history of the field of art therapy while also learning about the founding mothers and fathers. This Tissue Paper Collage art directive was inspired by Edith Wallace and Jung’s “active imagination”.
It was a fun art directive because we only had the tissue paper to rip, cut, tear and make into collages with only one other art material- glue! It’s a great exercise to engage the imagination and see what organic forms arise from the art making. It is a particularly useful art therapy directive when one does not have many art supplies.
It is great to explore the different art media for art therapy and recognize that there may be instances when we, as art therapists, may have limited materials.
It’s always fun to work on art directives as a class to showcase how we can use these directives in our own future group settings or 1:1 session and adapt it into any population or learning outcome.
