The Capstone Story
This year’s summer Capstone A was an entirely virtual experience since all of our students were distance learners for this term. The idea “germinated” very quickly as this group was a close cohort; they decided upon a virtual garden where they would create symbols for each other and themselves and then work on designing a banner that would be beautiful digitally but would also be printed to hang in the Wild Heart Gallery on campus. While working with this group, I was astounded by the consideration, care, and generosity that they displayed for one another. It was an honor to be a part of this venture. Please take a moment with their group and individual artist statements:
Our Remote Experience
Navigating our Art Therapy and Counseling program remotely has been a unique and transformative journey. The virtual format has brought both challenges and opportunities. On some days, the convenience and flexibility of remote learning have been ideal, allowing us to connect with classmates from various parts of the country. On other days, distractions, health issues, and screen fatigue have posed significant hurdles. Despite these challenges, the virtual environment has enabled us to forge meaningful connections and collaborate in ways that might not have been possible otherwise. This experience has underscored the importance of adaptability and resilience, qualities that are reflected in our art and our personal growth.
Why We Created a Virtual Garden
The idea of creating a virtual garden emerged from our collective appreciation for earth-based symbols and our perception of Southwestern College as a nurturing ground for growth and exploration. Nature has always been a source of inspiration in our art, and the garden symbolizes a harmonious blend of diverse elements coming together to thrive. The garden metaphor resonated with us as a tight-knit cohort, reflecting our interconnectedness and mutual support. Each element of the garden represents our individual experiences and the collective journey we have undertaken. The virtual garden is a testament to the beauty of our community and the growth we have experienced together.
Individual Symbols
Stephanie Watson – Dahlias
I chose dahlias because they embody diversity within a single species, symbolizing the uniqueness of individuals coming together harmoniously. Each color and shape of the dahlias in our garden represents the varied personalities of our classmates as I perceive them. This diversity within unity is a powerful metaphor for our cohort.
Brooke Willis – Mushrooms
Mushrooms have always fascinated me as symbols of growth, resilience, and learning. Each mushroom in the garden represents a member of our group and the unique connection I share with them. Despite the challenges of virtual learning, I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to connect with incredible people from across the country, forming friendships that have enriched my life. The mushrooms in our garden symbolize the strength and support we offer each other.
Ashen Montgomery – Butterflies
The butterfly is a symbol of transformation and exploration. As we prepare to spread our wings and venture beyond the garden of our program, each butterfly represents a classmate and the unique journey they have undertaken. The butterflies in our garden remind us of our growth and readiness to explore new horizons.
Briana Forde – Irises
Irises represent a journey of self-discovery and expression for me. Their vibrant hues and diverse forms mirror my evolving sense of identity and creativity. In choosing the iris, I aim to celebrate individuality, as each iris is distinct in its beauty and form, just like each person. The irises in our garden symbolize the balance between fragility and strength, reflecting our collective journey of growth and connection.
Alexis Izatt – Daisies
My contribution to the garden was a variety of daisies known for their vibrant and resilient nature. Daisies can weather life’s storms, much like my classmates and I have endured and overcome the challenges we face. The daisies in our garden symbolize our shared strength and optimism.
Our virtual garden is a symbol of the community we have built and the growth we have experienced at Southwestern College. Each symbol represents our individual journeys and the collective bond that unites us. Despite the challenges of remote learning, we have thrived together, creating a vibrant and diverse garden that reflects our shared commitment to growth, exploration, and connection.
