- April Vogel, PhD
April Vogel is a licensed psychologist with 30 years of experience in teaching, counseling, research, and assessment. She received her B.A. in Psychology at Stanford University, her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in children and families from the University of Miami, her internship training at Franciscan Children’s Hospital (Boston University), and her post-doctoral training at Johns Hopkins University. Her career has combined a devotion to counseling children, adolescents, and families, with a commitment to teaching, publishing scientific research papers, and conducting program evaluations. She has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, universities, and independent day schools ranging from preschool to high school.
April began her teaching experience designing and leading a course for the Miami-Dade court system for parents about the effects of divorce on children. She then taught undergraduate courses at the University of Miami on Developmental Psychology, Social and Emotional Development, and Effective Behavioral Health Delivery Systems. She later joined the faculty of a pre-K through 12th grade Miami independent day school as the Guidance Counselor in the High School where she taught Life Skills courses to 10th graders. When she moved from Miami to Santa Fe nine years ago, she taught in 3rd grade at Rio Grande School where she focused on mathematics instruction.
Since 2019, April has been an Adjunct Faculty member at SWC, facilitating courses for both counseling and art therapy/counseling students enrolled in the Master’s Programs. This opportunity has allowed her to embrace her commitment to “multiple ways of knowing”, and to integrate into her teaching her training in somatic movement, expressive arts therapy, meditation, and dance art/life therapy. A sampling of courses she has taught includes: Applied Theories of Human Development, Research Methods and Program Evaluation, School Counseling, Assessment and Appraisal in Counseling, Family Therapy in Counseling, and Psychology of Altruism, and Hermeneutics of Self. Her spiritual practice centers on meditation, yoga, and a deep connection to nature. Working at SWC has been a true blessing and has allowed her new opportunities to say “yes” to the unknown and to grow spiritually along with students and fellow faculty.
Starting in the Fall of 2023, she became a Faculty Mentor for the SWC Ph.D. in Visionary Practice and Regenerative Leadership Program, serving as a mentor for incoming students, a member of the “Dispositions Review Committee”, and co-teaching the Embodied Cosmology course. Now April is thrilled to join the MA TTLL program faculty and believes that it matches ideally with her beliefs in transformational teaching, partnership leadership as well as creative methods for transformation, healing, and scholarship.
