Dr. Jackie Gerstein, LPCC, earned her Doctorate of Education from Northern Illinois University, a CACREP-accredited program, a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Northern Colorado, and a Bachelor of Science in Individual and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University.
She has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within counseling and education programs for several decades. Her background includes a strong focus on experiential and adventure learning which she brings into her teaching practices.
Gerstein began her counseling career facilitating experiential and adventure therapy experiences for at-risk and adjudicated youth from group homes and residential treatment centers, and later, psychiatric hospitals. She then switched her focus to working with pre-service and in-service teachers as she believes they are often the first responders for troubled children and youth. Her teacher education instruction includes strategies for developing social-emotional skills in student and for using trauma informed practices. Currently, she also teaches gifted elementary students at Title 1 schools in Santa Fe with a goal of providing them with experiences for better navigating their lives.
She is the author of several books including: Sticking Together: Experiential Activities for Family Counseling and Metaphors for Living: Stories & Related Experiential Exercises for Individual, Group & Family Growth.
