Prior to receiving the first disbursement of any Federal Direct Loan students must complete entrance counseling and complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). In addition, all student borrowers of a loan made under the Federal Direct Loan Program must complete exit counseling after the borrower ceases to attend at least half-time enrollment or graduates from the college.
Entrance Counseling
How to complete Entrance Counseling for a Direct Unsubsidized Loan:
- Visit studentloans.gov
- Log in using your FSA-ID
- Select the Complete Entrance Counseling link
- Make sure to select Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan Entrance Counseling for Graduate students
- Select to Notify Southwestern College
- Complete Sections 1-5
Graduate PLUS loan entrance counseling will be completed with direct unsubsidized loan counseling for graduate students. If you apply for a graduate PLUS loan and further counseling is required, you will be notified by the Financial Aid Office via email.
Master Promissory Note
How to complete a Master Promissory Note for a Direct Unsubsidized Loan:
- Visit studentloans.gov
- Login using your FSA-ID
- Complete Loan Agreement for a Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan (MPN)
- Select to Notify Southwestern College
- Complete Sections 1-5
The graduate PLUS loan requires its own Master Promissory Note. To complete one, please follow the ‘how to complete a Master Promissory Note’ for a direct unsubsidized loan and choose ‘complete loan agreement for a plus loan’ (MPN) in step three.
