Becoming Visionary Is A Mindset You Will Need –by Jim Nolan
What does it mean to be “Visionary”?
Visionary means looking into our unprecedentedly uncertain future and introducing innovation and creativity with a conscious intention of identifying the most useful questions, possibilities, solutions, and actions for making positive change in the world.
The Wise Ones (I say that with the utmost respect) in the worlds of business, entrepreneurship, higher education, technology (especially technology), finance, health care and beyond have been telling us the following for several years now: “Standard operating procedures no longer apply; the old models don’t work anymore. We all must innovate if we are to survive.”
Narratives, strategies, solutions, ways of thinking and conceptualizing that served us in the past may be outdated, inapplicable, no longer helpful, given the new technologies, world order, or our own personal development.
Of course we can and should be informed by the past, but looking into uncertainty and using the skills of Innovators, we can strive toward Visionary, and make decisions for the future that will make all the difference.
Strive toward Visionary, or get left behind in outdated, self-defeating ways of thinking and doing things. We, as therapists, should be really good at this, since at the individual level, you could argue that therapy and life coaching involve visioning new possibilities for our clients
