Muliebrity: The State of Being Feminine

“Muliebrity” is coordinate term to “virility,” referring to qualities of femininity. Southwestern College staff, faculty, and students were invited to explore how they connect with and empower the feminine aspects of the self,  community, or greater collective via artistic processes. The Wild Heart Gallery proudly presented a series of artist statements from this exhibition, which ran from November 2016 through January 2017.

I consider artists with theatrical and folk art influences. I mindfully digest vignettes from their time in this world. The depiction of this style of narrative influences how I go about expressing mine.

I think of myself at a younger age, tapping into finding a good, personal, relational balance to animus – the Jungian concept of the masculine energy of a feminine person. This is a thing which has remained important to me since I was a kiddo, even before I had a word to describe the way I lived.

I re-imagine the significant elements of that era of life; the music that colored it and the subtle symbols of visually communicated empowerment – playing with language and mixing meaning. In recognizing that part of my history, I feel a ridiculous appreciation for youthful potentiality and vitality. This assembled piece is an acknowledgement and representation of dynamis.
