I have been a counselor for 22 years but I found that I needed to have more knowledge and tools to work more effectively with younger children ages 3 to 8. I chose to pursue the Children’s Mental Health Certificate offered through Southwestern College as it seemed to have an integrative and expansive focus. I have been enriched by the knowledge and skills I have participated in on the weekend classes. The weekend workshops are particularly convenient for me as I maintain a private practice in southwestern New Mexico. All of the classes have been presented by experts in their particular filed. The experiential portion of the classes provide an opportunity to learn and grow in a challenging yet safe environment.

I never wanted to work with children, but when a scholarship opportunity for CMH came up, I could not resist. After one class I was hooked. In my opinion, getting my CMH is one of the best parts of my education at SWC. I use the knowledge I learned from my CMH classes everyday in my work as an in-home therapist, since half of my clientele just happens to be children! And even more surprisingly, I love working with them through art, play, and imagination. I would recommend CMH to any new therapist.

The Children’s Mental Health classes have provided me with a wealth of knowledge I use all the time in my work. The infant mental health classes focused on attachment theory and how different styles of attachment affect children. The play therapy classes helped me learn creative ways to work with children and families. I am grateful to have completed this certificate program, as it has greatly enhanced my work as a therapist.
