There Are Not Four Directions: A Poem

There Are Not Four Directions: A Poem

There are not Four Directions,

as there are not Seven Chakras.

There is no Holy Trinity,

as there is no “New Mexico.”

It is OK to pretend,

to tell these stories,

and it is a lot better

to remember

that we are pretending,

that we are telling stories.

They are good stories.

They carry Truth,

but are not Truth itself.

Jim Nolan is the president of Southwestern College, and remembers the day he realized that the word “ball” is not the ball itself, and that a picture of a ball is not the ball, either. That changed everything.
