Capstone Project: Artist Statement

Suzanne Otter, Fall 2012

Making art as a way to work through complex personal issues was helpful to me during the many years I worked as an organizational development consultant. I continued this “self-art therapy” during my formal study of art therapy and counseling at Southwestern College. The image-making and journaling was especially important to me during my internship because it marked the transition from working with clients around large system issues to the intimate and personal domain of art therapy and counseling.

I am pleased to share selected images from the journals made during my studies. Some images have been recreated when removing the original would damage the journal. I hope that viewers will connect with their own challenges in one or more of the 24 images, and find these paintings and drawings to be helpful in the mysterious process of creating a joyful life.

Suzanne will be showing her work at Southwestern College, and her opening event will be September 28th, from 6-8.
