Winter was a long one this time around, a long two years it was
Some call it the dark night of the soul

I used to call it hell on earth
It chose me, I sure didn’t choose it

It’s not just too many toxic chemicals

It’s not just heavy metals stored at my core
It’s not just the mercury that was in my teeth for years
It’s not just energetic imbalance
It’s not just a hormonal imbalance
It’s not just behaviorally conditioned reactions
It’s not just a cross-wired limbic system
It’s not just accumulated trauma
It’s not just that sometimes I am afraid to claim my power
It’s not just too much emotional permeability
It’s not just too much stress
It’s not just electromagnetic field sensitivity
It’s not just that the sense of smell connects directly to the amygdala
It’s not just that I’m a highly sensitive person
It’s not just my soul’s journey
It’s not just the initiation of a healer
It’s not just the mind-body split at the core of our society
It’s not just our separation from Nature
It’s not just our separation from Spirit
It’s not just our hyper-rational Western ego
It’s not just our addiction to comfort and ease
It’s not just corporate and unconscious collective greed
It’s not just our obsession with controlling Nature
It’s all these – I know that now
I’ve learned that the hard way
There is no silver bullet
This body/mind is an ecosystem far more complex than Western medicine dares to acknowledge
I am a Borderlander
I am a canary in the coal mine of the 21st Century techno-industrial rape of planet Earth

It’s a blessing and a curse to be living in the Borderlands
I am that wounded healer and, now I know, I AM HEALING!

Jim Nolan is in his 6th year as president of Southwestern College. He has worked for a dozen universities or colleges, both online and on the ground. He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, and attended graduate school in English/Irish Literature.
