Dianne & Two Dachshunds Revisited, w/Lost Chapter!

How We Ended Up (happily) with Two Dachshunds

Following the death of Lucy, my beloved canine companion of 12 ½ years, I was grieving pretty heavily. I missed her presence in my home. Lucy was such a large spirited dog and a wonderful companion. She would often study my face for long periods of time while I was watching TV or reading. I joked that she was taking notes on how to be a human in her next life.

We made a couple of unsuccessful attempts at adoption in the months after her passing, then resolved to stop ‘trying’ to find a dog because it didn’t seem to be working. We resolved that we would wait for the right one to come to us.

Well, the very next day after making this resolution, my partner was driving down a busy Santa Fe street on a cold, wintry day and saw this little black dachshund running around. She stopped and rounded him up, thinking we would try and find the owner. He had no collar or tag, and he was in pretty bad shape. We gave the animal shelter our contact information. They determined he had no ID chip, so we put an ad in the New Mexican and one on craigslist. No one claimed him. After a couple of weeks we were glad no one did, because we were in Love. We wanted to keep him. We got him the medical attention he needed and the rest is history, as they say. We simply love this little guy, Rico is his name. He is so affectionate and funny and smart. He is as companionable a dog as you could ever imagine.

After a few months of enjoying his company, we wondered if we should maybe get another one because he was home alone for long periods of time. We had heard that dachshunds really enjoy the company of other dachshunds. So I began my search and after a few months of monitoring the New Mexico Dachshund Rescue site, I spotted a beautiful auburn long-haired little girl. I knew she was The One. Very quickly I put in my application and adopted her. The two of them hit it off from day one. Rico and Bambi are the best of pals. They play together, sleep together, walk together. We couldn’t be happier with our two little dachshunds. They are a perfect fit for us.

Dianne works in the office as Chief Administrative Support. She LOVES her two rescue dachshunds, Bambi and Rico. They bring so much love and sweetness and laughter to her and her partner’s lives.
