Co-creators in the Classroom

Co-creators in the Classroom

Co-Creators in the Classroom at Southwestern College

I am teaching Career and Life Development this quarter. It is a second year course and many state boards require it for licensing. The class is a good size – 11 people, with a nice mix of ages. I really enjoy the opportunity to teach here because of the approach the college promotes. An experiential classroom is so much more interesting to me than one that is heavy with lecture. I like the practical approach of the classroom and the freedom to be able to change the direction of any one class based on what the students are bringing in for discussion. I am interested in hearing what challenges them…what they are curious about when they explore the field. I enjoy their insights and wisdom, and hope that I am creating enough of a laboratory for them to apply what they are learning.  They seem to be engaged and active in the process. I think the “give and take” partnership that is created for each class makes it work. I really value the students as co-creators. I think it is the best way adults learn!
